Netanyahu rejects OIC's decision to recognise East Jerusalem as capital of Palestine

The decision by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to declare East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine has been rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Reacting to the declaration by the OIC, Netanyahu said that “all these statements fail to impress us”.

“The truth will win in the end and many countries will certainly recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and also move their embassies,” he added in response to the comments made by Muslim leaders during the OIC’s emergency summit in Istanbul.

Members of the OIC made the pronouncement recognising East Jerusalem as capital of Palestine in a draft declaration during a summit of the Muslim leaders in Istanbul, Turkey on Wednesday and also striped President Donald Trump the role of a peacemaker in the region.

The leaders said they considered Washington’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel as a sign of U.S. withdrawal from its role as a sponsor of Middle East peace.

The draft statement said leaders, ministers and officials from more than 50 Muslim countries “declare East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine, and invite all countries to recognize the State of Palestine and East Jerusalem as its occupied capital.”
