New helmsman takes over at UBA

Mr. Kennedy Uzoka will as from Monday August 1 takes over as the substantive group managing director at United Bank for Africa (UBA).

The tenure of the incumbent, Mr Phillips Oduoza, ends on July 31, 2016.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has already approved the appointment of Uzoka.

Oduoza is retiring after completing two terms leading the UBA Group.

The Tony Elumelu-led board of UBA had in March 2016 announced the appointment of Uzoka, a former group deputy managing director, subject to the approval of the apex bank.

In what underlined the transitional corporate governance in the bank, the board has also appointed Mr. Victor Osadolor as the group deputy managing director.

Uzoka most recently returned from completing the Advanced Management Programme of Harvard Business School. He has over two and half decades of experience in commercial banking, strategy and business transformation.

Prior to his sabbatical at Harvard, Uzoka served as Deputy Managing Director, UBA group and was also the CEO of UBA Africa, responsible for the Group’s operations in 18 countries across Africa. The new GMD is a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from University of Benin and holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from University of Lagos.

Osadolor previously served as the Executive Director, Risk and Finance at UBA. He had also held the position of Chief Strategy Officer at Ecobank Transnational Incorporation. Osadolor holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Accountants of Nigeria. He also holds the Advanced Management Programme Certificate from the Harvard Business School.

Meanwhile, stakeholders have commended Oduoza for his contributions to the growth of one of Africa’s biggest banks. At a book launch in his honour, chairman of Best Foods Limited, who was the chairman of the book launch, Emmanuel Ijewere said  Oduoza is worth celebrating because he has proven himself to be a worthy  banker, an authority in the banking industry, and an administrator who has traversed the banking and financial landscape without blemish.

Also, chairman, United Bank for Africa (UBA), Tony Elumelu commended Oduoza for sustaining the growth trajectory of UBA Plc in the last six years.

Alex Otti, former chief executive officer at Diamond Bank Plc, praised Oduoza for his extra-ordinary talent and management skills and leaving the banking industry with his integrity intact. He urged Oduoza to ensure that he puts his wealth of experience in the banking industry to the benefit of the country.

The editor of the book and a renowned academician from the University of Lagos,  Professor Mike Ogbeide, said the book is a worthy testimony of Oduoza’s  sterling contributions to an industry whose zenith he reached by scoring many firsts.
