Osimhen hat-trick as U-23 Eagles complete incredible comeback against Libya

Victor Osimhen scored a hat-trick to help the U-23 Eagles complete an incredible comeback victory over Libya in an Africa Cup of Nations (U-23 AFCON) qualifier.

Trailing 2-0 from the first leg away, the Eagles put up a fine performance as they secured a 4-0 win in Asaba to advance with a 4-2 aggregate win.

Osimhen, one of the four players drafted to the team from the Super Eagles, opened the scoring in the 37th minute to put the hosts at ease at halftime.

The Wolfsburg forward, who is currently playing on loan at Charleroi S.C., doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 67th minute before completing his hat-trick 11 minutes from time.

The 20-year old last scored a hat-trick at the 2015 U-17 FIFA World Cup in Chile in Nigeria’s 6-0 victory over Australia in the Round of 16.

To seal off the victory, David Okereke completed the rout with a fine goal at the stroke of 90 minutes.

The Imama Amapakabo boys have now advanced to the final round of the U-23 Nations Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria won the last edition of the CAF competition four years ago in Senegal edging out Algeria 2-1 in the final.

Egypt is billed to host this year’s
edition in November.

The tournament will determine the teams that will represent the continent at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
