As fuel scarcity bites harder govt says PENGASSAN planned strike is against agreement

For embarking on strike, members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) have been labeled law breakers by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige,

He blasted NARD members for embarking on strike while there was an ongoing conciliation by the Federal Government and said their action is a breach of Section 18 of the Trade Dispute Act of 2004.

“Once conciliation starts by the government, no employer has the right to embark on strike. By going on strike you have breached Section 18 of the Trade Dispute Act of 2004,” he told them.

Ngige, who stated this at a mediation meeting with the striking doctors at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja on Wednesday, however expressed hope that the strike may be the shortest to have happened in the country.

He pleaded with the striking doctors to without any further delay call off the strike and return to work.
In attendance at the meeting were NARD leaders and some members; leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA); the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole; the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire; the representatives of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation among others.

Reporters at the venue of the meeting were later asked to leave so that the parties can have a private deliberation on the troubling issues that necessitated the strike action.
