Niger boat accident death toll hits 42

Rescue workers have recovered six more bodies from the scene of a boat mishap in Niger State.

The development brought to 42 the bodies of passengers who lost their lives in the accident that occurred in Mokwa local government area of the state on Tuesday.

A boat carrying over 300 people—predominantly women and children—tumbled into the water while crossing from Mundi Community to the Gbajibo Community in the area.

The passengers were heading to the Gbajibo Community for the Eid-el-Maulid when the accident occurred.

The Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Arah, confirmed the recovery of the additional bodies in a statement on Friday.

He said the bodies were recovered between 6:00 p.m. on Thursday and 9:00 a.m. on Friday.
