Nigeria beaten as South Africa extend unbeaten run

The Bafana Bafana of South Africa have extended their unbeaten run after defeating the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday.

The 2-0 win was a record victory for the South Africans, who dominated the game and secured their very first win against Nigeria in a competitive international match.

Goals from Tokelo Rantie and Tosie Tau – in the 53rd and 80th minutes respectively – handed the Gernot Rohr’s men their first defeat since the German tactician took charge in August last year.

The South Africans have not tasted defeat since a third-string selection lost 2-0 at home to Angola in an African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier in October 2015.

They have thus gone 18 games unbeaten, which is the longest current unbeaten streak of any nation in Africa.

The win takes the Stuart Baxter’s men to second in Group E of the qualifiers behind Lybia, who thrashed Seychelles 5-1 in the group opener on Friday.

Nigeria have started on a poor note by facing a defeat at home.

However, the Eagles will play their next fixture of the Afcon qualifiers against Seychelles in March, 2018, while Bafana will host Lybia in the same period.
