Nigeria confirms fresh 60 cases of Lassa fever

LASSA FEVER: 50 years after first recorded case, Nigeria to host first Int’l conference

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed the outbreak of 60 new cases of Lassa fever across eight states in the country.

Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Director-General of NCDC who announced the outbreak in Abuja on Tuesday, said the centre had monitored the disease from January 1 to January 13 and can confirm it had spread over eight states.

To manage the disease, he explained that Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has been activated to coordinate the nationwide response to the outbreak, noting that the EOC includes World Health Organisation (WHO) ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development, Environment, US Centres for Disease Control, among others.

He said, “There has been an increase in the number of Lassa fever cases reported from several states across the country since the beginning of the year.

“As at January 13, 60 confirmed cases have been reported in eight states.

“Given this increase in reported cases, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has declared this an outbreak”.
