Baring any change in policy, as from January 2017, all payments to government agencies from any airline operating in Nigeria will no longer be done using cash.

According to the NCAA spokesman, Sam Adurogboye, the measure is part of steps aimed at stemming the tide of disputes over issues bordering on claims and counter claims over payment to agencies in the sector.

But most of the airlines said they were being taken unawares on the matter.

A senior official of one of airlines said the January deadline was not feasible, given the crisis in the industry, which has seen them unable to install the needed technology for that.

“There is working system, which has earlier been agreed on to be operational until the end of of second quarter of 2017, but we are yet to be informed about any change on that, ” he said.

NCAA has said that the only way to check allegation of lack of transparency in the sector is to quickly introduce the automated payment system as is obtainable in other countries.

” To ensure transparency there will be no going back to the automatic payment of all charges as from January, so that there will no longer be any dispute over pile up as debts, as airlines are currently having, ” said the spokesman.

According to a source, part of the charges include the disputed five per cent ticket sales charge/cargo sales charge, which the operators are still contesting their payment.
