Nigeria ranks 4th in global soft drinks' sales, consumption -Report

Nigeria is ranked fourth, globally, in the volume of soft drinks’ sales and consumption , as recorded in 2016, according Head of Market Development, German Engineering Federation, Mrs. Martina Claus.

Claus disclosed this while addressing the press on Wednesday at the ongoing Third International Trade Exhibition on Agrofood, Plastics, Printing and Packaging in Lagos.

The facts, according to her, are drawn from the statistics on soft drinks sales which were sourced from the Euromonitor International, a global market intelligence publisher.

The figures showed that about 38.68 million litres of soft drinks were sold in Nigeria in 2016 alone, which saw Nigeria trailing behind the United States, with 114.75, China having 88.18 and Mexico maintaining 45.30 figure in the top markets’ ranking in 2016 .

On sale of alcohol, Claus disclosed that not less than 1.98 million litres of the drinks were sold in Nigeria in 2016, while a total volume of 147 tons of milk products was also sold.

“Nigeria’s urbanisation as well as fast-growing population have played some vital roles in bringing about a continuing demand for soft drinks, especially as the climate is quite hot.

“Also, lack of potable water is largely responsible for the consumption of about 36.08 million litres of bottled water in 2016,” she said.

According to her, the Nigerian food and beverage market remains viable for investment in spite of the challenges of high energy cost and volatile raw material prices.

Over 100 leading technology exhibitors from 20 countries are participating in the ongoing exhibition billed to end on Thursday .

Am not surprised with this rating, I even expect us to be number one. That’s why Nigeria has high rate record of diabetes as well. Most Nigerians can’t eat without Coke, 7up and other soft drinks which is a risk to our health. Some have even taken it to be their water after meal.

Since our government is bad, economy isn’t friendly, jobs are hectic, what else can we do if not to consume soft drinks and perhaps alcohol to cool off?

You have no sense bro. So it is bad governance that make you consume soft drinks? Then bad governance will lead to your death soon.

Is this supposed to be an achievement? We ranked 4th position in global soft drinks’ sales and consumption, how much has this added to my bank account? The health effects of soft drinks are bad, this position is nothing to celebrate. Nigerians are killing themselves by consuming too much of soft drinks!
