The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a police officer, which occurred during an altercation with a soldier in Lagos on October 9, 2024.

According to a statement from Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, on Thursday, the division expressed sorrow over the incident, which arose from a dispute regarding an alleged traffic violation.

Reports indicate that soldiers from the Ojo Cantonment Barracks, led by an unidentified individual, confronted the officer, Saka Ganiyu, for driving against traffic. The altercation resulted in the tragic stabbing of the policeman.

The statement confirmed that the soldier involved has been arrested and is now in the custody of the Military Police for further investigation and disciplinary measures.

Labeling the event as “highly regrettable,” the army reiterated its commitment to adhering to the Nigerian Army’s Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement. It also emphasized ongoing warnings to personnel against behavior that could harm the army’s reputation or disrupt relations with other security forces and the public.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the division expressed condolences to the family of the deceased officer and the Nigeria Police Force, assuring that a comprehensive investigation is underway to deliver justice.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to fostering collaboration with other security agencies in order to secure lives and property, in line with its constitutional mandate,” the statement concluded, reaffirming its dedication to maintaining professional standards and public trust throughout the investigation.
