Nigerian Army responsible for kidnap of schoolgirls, same thing happened in 2013 –Gov Gaidam

Yobe State governor, Ibrahim Gaidam has said that Nigerian Army must be held responsible for the abduction of 110 schoolgirls of Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC) Dapchi, Yobe State.

He argued that it was the sudden withdrawal of troops from Dapchi that led to the abduction of the girls by the Boko Haram insurgents.

The governor lamented that the development was a repeat of what the Army also did in 2013, when it allegedly withdrew soldiers guarding Buni-Yadi, a town in the state, which led to an attack by the insurgent group on a science secondary school in the town leading to the deaths of no less than 29 students.

Gaidam stated this when Borno State Governor, and chairman Northern Governors’ Forum, Kashim Shettima, paid him a sympathy visit in Damaturu, Yobe State capital.

“I blame the whole attack on Dapchi on the military and the defence headquarters which withdrew troops from Dapchi. The attack occurred barely a week after the military withdrew the soldiers from there.

“Before then, Dapchi has been peaceful, there was never such incident. But just a week after they withdrew the troops, Boko Haram came to attack the town.

“Let me be quoted anywhere, the military must take blame for the attack on Dapchi. The same thing happened in 2013 when the military suddenly removed troops guarding the town and a week later Boko Haram went there to attack the town and the secondary school there killing 29 students.”

Yobe State government had on Wednesday after the attack on Monday, claimed in a statement by the governor’s spokesman, Abdullahi Bego, that some of the girls had been freed from the terrorists who abducted them by the Nigerian troops.

However, on a visit to Dapchi on Thursday, Governor Gaidam was stunned to discover that none of the girls has been rescued. This made the governor quickly withdraw his earlier statement that some of the girls had been freed.
