Nigerian govt approves N1.4bn to equip 6 airports

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) in its meeting on Wednesday gave approval for a sum of N1.365 billion for the procurement of new equipment for the completion of control towers in 6 airports after previous government had ceased funding for the purchase.

Addressing the journalist after the Council’s meeting, the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, said the airports located in Maiduguri, Akure, Kaduna, Ilorin, Benin and Ibadan will be benefitting from the procurement.

According to him, “FEC approved procurement of equipment for the completion of control towers in some airports that included Maiduguri, Akure, Kaduna, Ilorin, Benin and Ibadan.

Sirika said despite the importance of the procurement, the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration from 2011 “stopped funding” the procurement of the equipment after it had given similar approval for such procurement in 2011.

“So, we provided for it in 2017 so that we can complete it and the council has graciously approved to complete these control towers which will enhance communications and security of our airspace. The total value is N1, 365, 364, 458.75,” he said.
