Nigerian govt confirms 13 cases of UK COVID-19 variant

The Chairman of Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, said on Monday 13 cases of the United Kingdom strain of COVID-19 have been discovered in Nigeria.

Mustapha, who disclosed this at the weekly media briefing of the PTF, said six cases were discovered in the last one week.

The B117 COVID-19 variant was first discovered in the UK late last year.

He said: “The PTF through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is working with the Africa CDC on genomic surveillance.

“A total of 13 B117 COVID-19 variant have so far been detected in Nigeria.

“Six out of these cases were detected in the last one week and they all came out of samples collected between November and January.”
