The Federal Government has ordered the closure of an Abuja-based laboratory for issuing fake COVID-19 results to international passengers.

The Director-General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, who disclosed this at the weekly media briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Monday in Abuja, said the development followed an investigation conducted by the government after a media report on the matter.

He said the media had last year reported that some laboratories were issuing fake COVID-19 results to international passengers.

The NCDC chief said: “Based on that report, an investigation was conducted and the government ordered the closure of the affected laboratory by Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).”

The federal government had directed international travelers to undergo a compulsory COVID-19 test before and after arriving in the country.

The measure was aimed at checking the spread of the virus in the country.
