Nigerian govt vows to end illegal mining in Zamfara amid security concerns
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to halting all forms of illegal mining in Zamfara State, citing persistent security challenges linked to mining activities.
Mr. Abunumah Samuel, Mining Officer of the Federal Ministry of Solid Mineral Resources, addressed journalists in Gusau on Thursday, outlining the ministry’s strategy to clamp down on both legal and illegal miners in collaboration with security agencies.
“We are working tirelessly to rid Zamfara State of illegal mining,” Samuel stated. “The Anti-Illegal Mining Unit of the Zamfara State Police Command has been informed of numerous illegal mining activities, resulting in the arrest of several illegal miners.”

He emphasized that the 2019 ban on mining remains in effect, impacting both licensed and unlicensed miners.
“The ban affects everyone, including those with mining licenses,” Samuel clarified. “Until further notice, all mining sites must be vacated. Those who refuse to comply will face arrest and prosecution.”
The Federal Government has compiled a list of licensed miners, who must await further directives from authorities.
Zamfara State has grappled with banditry and security issues, prompting Governor Dauda Lawal to prohibit traditional rulers from issuing consent letters for mining. The state government has also taken steps to curb illegal mining, recognizing its role in fueling banditry.
