Nigerian UK born Fiona Onasanya sacked as member of Parliament for over speeding offence

Nigerian UK born Fiona Onasanya has been removed from office as a member of the British parliament after her conviction for an over-speeding offense which she lied about.

BBC reports that the 35-year-old former member of the parliament who was jailed for the speeding offense was ousted out after 19,261 constituents of Peterborough City had signed a petition against her presence in the parliament.

It was earlier reported that Onasanya was jailed for three months, becoming the first sitting politician in nearly three decades to be jailed after she lied to police when she was issued with a speeding ticket by police.

It was learnt that the petition against Ms Onasanya is the first time a recall petition has been held in England.

Commons Speaker John Bercow confirmed the recall petition had been successful.

He told MPs:

“Fiona Onasanya is no longer the member for Peterborough and the seat is accordingly vacant.

“She can therefore no longer participate in any parliamentary proceedings as a member of parliament.”
