Nigerians in Lebanon resist evacuation as Middle East conflict escalates
The Federal Government’s plans to evacuate Nigerians from conflict-ravaged Lebanon have hit a roadblock as many citizens in the Gulf State are unwilling to return home.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.
He said many Nigerians are resisting efforts to bring them back home despite the escalating Israel-Hezbollah conflict which has heightened concerns over the safety of foreign nationals in the country.
The spokesman added that about 500 Nigerians have registered with the Mission, but there are over 2,000 Nigerians residing in Lebanon.
“Even though most of them have not indicated a willingness to return home despite our Embassy’s persuasion, we will continue to do everything to ensure the safety of our citizens,” Abu-Obe stated.
The government urged Nigerians in Lebanon not to resist evacuation, warning that the conflict may escalate.

“The Nigerian government urges all citizens living in Lebanon not to resist evacuation… and appeals for cooperation with the evacuation process and adherence to safety guidelines,” he added.
The federal government planned to send a C-130 aircraft or other available flights for the evacuation exercise.
The conflict in Lebanon rooted in decades of territorial and political disputes between Israel and Hezbollah, has created instability in Southern Lebanon and neighbouring regions.
With rocket fire and airstrikes affecting civilian areas, fears of a wider regional war are growing.
