Nigeria’s Barkindo emerges new OPEC Sec-Gen

Nigeria’s Mohammed Barkindo has emerged the new secretary-general of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Bakindo was a former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, from 2009 to 2010, and served as acting secretary-general of OPEC in 2006, as well as representing Nigeria at the group.

He was nominated by the Federal Government for the position.

OPEC has been looking for a replacement for Libya’s Abdalla El-Badri, who was elected as acting secretary-general in December until the end of July after serving full terms.

Ripples Nigeria had reported in March that President Buhari would nominate Mohammed Barkindo as the next OPEC secretary general.

Sources  close to government had told Ripples Nigeria that the former NNPC helmsman was sure of getting Mr President’s nod for the exalted position.

A government official asking not to be named had disclosed to Ripples Nigeria said that, “We are putting Barkindo forward for the job of OPEC secretary general because he has the required qualification and experience.”
