Nigeria's Buhari moves to remove Gambia’s Jammeh

In the discharge of his mandate as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) mediator for The Gambia, President Muhammadu Buhari has activated the process for the execution of his task.

One of the outcomes of the just-concluded ECOWAS Summit held on December 17, 2016 in Abuja was the decision to designate President Buhari as the Mediator for The Gambia with Mr. John Mahama, the out- going President of Ghana as Co-Mediator.

The Summit also gave the terms of reference to include ensuring the safety of the President-Elect, Adama Barrow, the political leaders and the entire population; upholding the result of the Presidential election held on December 1, 2016 and ensuring that the President-elect is sworn into office on January 19, 2017, in conformity with the constitution of the country.

A statement by Mr Femi Adesina, Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, on the direction of the President, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama is leading a Mediation Support Team (MST), working with the team of the Co-Mediator, President Mahama. The committee has begun immediate consultations with leaders in the sub-region as well as with international partners.

The main task of the Mediation Support Team is to undertake the first phase of the preparatory and support work that would lead to a high level meeting of the Mediator (President Buhari) and the stakeholders.

President Muhammadu Buhari remains optimistic that a peaceful resolution of the problem, in line with the laws and the constitution of The Gambia is possible before the January 19, 2017 inauguration date of the new President.

Because Nigeria is the James Bond of Africa, Buhari has to go one-on-one with Jammeh, all in the name of discharging his ECOWAS duty, I hope this won’t turn bloody

Buhari is not serious, what is he feeling like that he wants to remove Jammeh? He better face the problems of his own country.

Buhari likes human praises . but he doesn’t know even the Gambians won’t praise him for helping. Same foolish buhari will be the one to pay the biggest share of the ECOWAS fund to take jammeh out of power and yet Nigerians are groaning in pains.

Jammeh is laughing at Buhari already because he knew he is deceiving himself. Except when foreign intervention comes to fore, no Africa military can stop jammeh.

Enough is enough . we have to put an end to sit tight syndrome in African politics . most African leaders believe power is hereditary and think it is like monarchical government where you stay in power till death. Jammeh should leave honourably now.

Jammeh will leave by peace or force. The presidential post is not his birth right, he’ll leave.

Jameh and Buhari will end up being similar. Wait until 2019, Buhari may not step down when we vote him out!

Pure lies. Obj would have tried that but he failed. I trust Buhari, he won’t even dare it

Jammeh should follow Jonathan ‘s path who honourably accepted defeat but remain a hero.
