Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council approves 2018 budget proposal

President Muhammadu Buhari presided over the Federal Executive Council (FEC) weekly meeting this Thursday during which the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approve the 2018 budget proposal.

The Presidency had on Wednesday via its twitter handle, announced that the weekly meeting which usually holds Wednesdays meeting was put off to allow for details to be finalised on the 2018 budget, which the Federal Government had earlier promised to present to the National Assembly for consideration by the end of October.

Meanwhile, the Wednesday meeting took place with the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau absent.

There were insinuations that Dambazau’s absence at the meeting may not be unconnected with the allegations that he played a major role in the reinstatement and promotion of former head of the defunct Presidential Task Force on Pensions Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina.

However, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, and Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Winifred Oyo- Ita, who have equally been accused of playing a role in Maina’s reinstatement, were among members present at the meeting.

At the close of the meeting the Minister of Budget and Planning, Mr. Udoma Udoma, told State House correspondents at the presidential villa, Abuja, that FEC has approved the 2018 budget. He added that the Council will soon be meeting with the National Assembly to decide when it will be submitted to the two chambers for consideration.

While Mr. Udoma refused to give details of the approved budget, he however noted that the nation’s constitution stipulates that only the president gives out the details. He said that the President is going to do that when the National Assembly is prepared to obtain the draft.

The government should give deadline to the Senate or National Assembly by the time they submit 2018 budget so they won’t delay like that of 2017 budget.

The senate knows the right thing to do, the budget prassing process has timing and I’m sure the senate will not want to delay this time around so as not to repeat previous mistakes that will carry 3017 budget till mid 2019 before the year starts budget will start running. The 2018 budget has to start functioning by January, so there won’t be any delay this time around

2018 will be the deciding year for Buhari to convince Nigerians that he’s indeed a good resident. I hope Buhari the budget will encapsulate all Buhari needs to reestablish himself as a trustworthy fellow.

A goodbye system of government should not be slow and be totally free of unnecessary delays. Now that FEC has approved the 2018 budget Nigeria is a step ahead of starting the year 2018 with fresh budget. This is encouraging
