Nigeria’s satellite maintenance to gulp N1.2bn

The Federal Government will this year spend N1.2 billion on the maintenance of the country’s satellite, NIGCOMSAT 1R.

NIGCOMSAT Limited, the government-owned company managing the satellite, is to spend substantial part of the amount on insurance and upgrade of the facility, New Telegraph has learnt.

This is, however, a 52 per cent drop from the N2.5 billion budgeted for the same purpose last year.

According to the 2019 executive budget proposal, the satellite company is to spend a total of N3.9 billion this year, out of which 2.7 billion goes into recurrent spending and the remaining is for capital expenditure on the satellite’s operations.

A breakdown of the allocations shows that NIGCOMSAT is to spend N209.9 million on insurance and upgrade of the satellite, while 122.3 million would be spent on turnaround maintenance of the satellite’s ground station.
