NLC orders indefinite strike in states over minimum wage delay
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), over the weekend issued a directive to its members in states that are yet to implement the new minimum wage to commence an indefinite strike beginning December 1.
This decision was reached at the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting where members expressed frustration over the persistent delay and refusal by some state governments to implement the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act.
“The NEC notes with deep frustration the persistent delay and outright refusal by some state governments to implement the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act,” the NLC communique read.
“This betrayal by certain governors and government officials across the country flies in the face of both legality and morality, as workers continue to be denied their rightful wages amidst rising economic hardship.”
To address this issue, the NLC has resolved to set up a National Minimum Wage Implementation Committee, which will conduct a nationwide assessment, mobilization, and sensitization campaign to educate workers and citizens on their rights.
The NLC will also initiate industrial actions in non-compliant states until the minimum wage is fully implemented across Nigeria.

Additionally, the NLC has accused petroleum marketers of inflating petrol prices, exploiting Nigerians, and contributing to the country’s economic hardship. The organization demands appropriate pricing of petrol and calls for domestic refineries to resume operations to break the monopolistic hold on the industry.
NLC demands:
– Immediate Implementation of Minimum Wage: The NLC demands that all states implement the new minimum wage by November 30, 2024.
– Appropriate Pricing of Petrol: The NLC calls for an end to inflated petrol prices and demands that marketers adhere to the actual market value.
– Comprehensive Social Protection Policies: The NLC urges the Federal Government to implement policies that shield Nigerians from poverty, provide affordable healthcare, and ensure a living wage.
“We call for the implementation of comprehensive social protection policies that shield Nigerians from poverty, provide affordable healthcare, and ensure a wage that reflects the true cost of living,” the NLC stated.
