NLC, TUC say Reps are a selfish insensitive bunch for procuring N3.6bn cars

The duo of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have both come down hard on members of the House of Representatives.

The unions expressed their displeasure towards the purchase of 360 cars worth N3.6 billion by the House of Representatives for its members as the country continues to battle recession.

The unions asserted that, the lower house has proven to be selfish and not concerned with the plights of Nigerians they claimed to represent in these hard times.

The General Secretary of the NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, described the action of the lawmakers as “unfortunate, insensitive and unacceptable”.

He further stated that, it shouldn’t have been at this period they ought to think of purchasing such exotic cars when some Nigerians can’t afford a meal per day.

He therefore called on the House to immediately reverse the deal made with the automobile company.

The President and the acting Secretary General of the TUC, Messrs Bala Kaigama and Simeso Amachree on their part, said such decisions taken by the lawmakers were responsible for the country’s problem.

They were of the opinion to scrap bi-cameral legislature in Nigeria so as to reduce the cost of maintaining the two. They suggested that having the Senate is enough for enacting laws for the country.

A political analyst and the Executive Director, Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Ibuchukwu Ezike, said such insensitivity has always been a problem with Nigerian leaders.

Ezike said, “…It is not today that we have begun to see the insensitivity of the leaders of this country and that was captured in the statement by the former British Prime Minister, David Cameron, saying that Nigeria is fantastically corrupt, and recently Donald Trump made his own statement about Nigeria.”

It should be recalled that a former House Committee Chairman on Appropiation, Abdulmumin Jibril exposed some corrupt practices in the same House which led to his suspension.

When do we the electorates start voting selfless and understanding people to political offices. We are being blindfolded by the peanuts they shared for us during campaign to think they are good people. Our destiny is in our hands. Nigerians need to be firm in conviction towards people will elect to represent us in government.
