Reps move to clip President's powers on removal of judges

Just as expected, the fireworks over the allegation of budget padding involving Speaker Yakubu Dogara and other principal officers of the House of Representatives have already begun.

This is as the House was thrown into a rowdy session after a motion seeking that Speaker Dogara steps down, to allow a proper investigation into allegation of budget padding levelled against him by Abdulmumin Jibrin, former House Committee Chairman on Appropriation, was raised on the floor of the House.

There were also side calls for the suspension of Jibrin by some members, further throwing the House into confusion.

Irrespective of the rowdy session, lawmakers loyal to Speaker Dogara finally had their way, frustrating all attempts to save Jibrin from the jugular as the House at the end, placed Jibrin before House supervisory body, the Ethics and Privileges committee.

Should Jibrin be found guilty after the one week investigation by the ethics and privileges committee, he may be suspended for six months.

The House had on Tuesday postponed its plenary till Wednesday (today) over a colleague’s death.

What played out as the House resumed sitting on Wednesday, only confirmed the expected drama in the lower chamber of the National Assembly as earlier reported by Ripples Nigeria.
