No African leader worthy of Mo Ibrahim award, for 2nd year running

For the second year running, no African leader is deemed worthy enough by the Mo Ibrahim Prize Committee to be bestowed with its prestigious Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership.

That much information was revealed by Tanzanian diplomat and former OAU Secretary General Salim Ahmed Salim who chairs the selection Committee.

Commenting on the development in a statement released after the Committee met with the Foundation’s Board, Dr Salim said that none of the recently retired heads of state on the continent merited the prize.

“As I emphasise each year, a very high bar was deliberately set when the Prize was launched in 2006. We recognise and applaud the important contributions that many African leaders have made to change their countries for the better”.

Continuing, he added that; “But the Prize is intended to highlight and celebrate truly exceptional leadership, which is uncommon by its very definition. After careful consideration, the Committee has decided not to award the Prize in 2016.”

The award launched in 2006 by Sudanese-British tycoon Mo Ibrahim, seeks to reward from among African retired Presidents and other heads of state who left office within the past three years “having been democratically elected and served their constitutionally mandated term.”
