No corrupt person would be spared, Buhari vows

President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed that no corrupt individual either in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will escape justice in his bid to rid the country of corruption and improve its fortune.

The President stated this in an interview with CNN chief correspondent, Christiane Amanpour, on Tuesday evening in New York

Answering questions on whether his anti-corruption fight would spare his party men, Buhari said: “I guess I have to go after anyone found to be corrupt. There isn’t going to be any party member (APC) or any personality that can escape justice.”

On whether his government would negotiate with the Boko Haram sect to effect the release of the abducted Chibok girls, he said: “I cannot be against it. I told you our main objective as a government is to secure those girls safe and sound back to their schools and rehabilitate them to go back to normal life.”

Expressing caution on the authenticity of leadership of the sect coming forward for negotiation, the president said his administration would be very careful about the credibility of various Boko Haram leaderships coming up and claiming that they can deliver.

“We have to be very careful and that is why we are taking our time because we want to bring them back safe to their parents and to their school,” he said.

He explained measures being put in place to fight the insurgency saying: “I have just mentioned that under Lake Chad Basin Commission, we have agreed to form a multinational joint task force, and I am sure you must have known the decision taken by the Federal Government of Nigeria in changing the military command.”

He added that the United States government has promised to help Nigeria in the fight against Boko Haram through training, equipment and intelligence gathering.

He also said he would be delighted if the US President Barack Obama, will “change his mind” and visit Nigeria in his upcoming visit to Africa.

He also spoke on the expectation of Nigerians from his government. “I can be held to my promises for the next years ahead of me, I think 12 weeks is too early for anybody to pass judgment on my campaign promises,” he said.

Speaking on trial of former African leaders outside the shore of the continent, he said that he is in support of any process that is based on justice.

“Justice is justice whether in Africa or elsewhere in the world. The important thing is let justice be done, whatever evidences the prosecutor has, I think they should proceed to make it available to the world and prosecute them according to international law of human right,” he said.
