We’re not aware of Shekau’s whereabouts —Army

The Nigerian Army says it is not aware of the whereabouts of the factional leader of Boko Haram terrorist sect, Abubakar Shekau.

The Army in a statement on Saturday by Brigadier General Sani Usman, Director Army Public Relations, said it is for this reason that the Army places a bounty of N3million on any information about the terrorist’s whereabouts.

The statement was in response to a report by an online news platform that the Army knows where Shekau is hiding.

Brig. Gen. Usman said “The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to a news story on Sahara Reporters alleging that the wanted purported factional Boko Haram terrorists group leader, Abubakar Shekau, is in Kolofata, Republic of Cameroon”.

According to him, the platform “credited the source of such information to the Nigerian Army”, and alleged, that ‘A top Boko Haram commander, Abdullahi Bello alias Abu Zainab, who was captured by the Nigerian Army on February 14, has disclosed that the wanted factional leader of the sect, Abubakar Shekau, has escaped to Kolofata in neighbouring Cameroon.’

The army however, stated that “This is not true. The Nigerian Army did not arrest such person, neither do we have such suspect in our custody. Contrary to the allegation on the medium, the Nigerian Army is not aware of the whereabouts of Abubakar Shekau hence the reward of the sum of N3 million Naira for any credible information on his whereabouts.

“We would like to implore all persons particularly journalists to always authenticate or cross check their facts and information from the Nigerian Army before publication or circulating”.

It would be recalled that the Army had recently notified Nigerians that Shekau was on the run and dresses up as a woman, wearing hijab to escape detection.

The Army later said it will give out N3 million cash reward for any credible information that leads to the arrest of Shekau, the fugitive factional Boko Haram terrorists’ group leader.

It asked anybody with such credible information to either contact the Military Command and Control Centre, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, any military location, security agencies or call the Nigerian Army Information and Call Centre 193.
