NUJ reflects on 2024, describes it as year of challenges for Nigerian journalists

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has described 2024 as one of the most challenging years for journalists and the nation, citing economic hardship, insecurity, and a series of attacks on media professionals.

The union has, however, urged leaders to capitalize on the resilience of Nigerians and chart a path toward national development in 2025.

In a statement titled *”2024: A Year of Challenges but Hope for Optimism in 2025,”* issued on Thursday and signed by its National Secretary, Achike Chude, the NUJ expressed deep concern over the dire state of the economy and the rising dangers faced by journalists. The union emphasized that while hope and optimism are vital, tangible policies and good governance are critical to rebuilding the country.

Reflecting on 2024, the NUJ noted that Nigeria faced severe challenges, including insecurity, soaring petroleum prices, inflation, unemployment, and widespread economic hardship. These issues were compounded by tragic events, such as the deaths of over 100 citizens in a stampede for food items—a moment the union described as a low point in the country’s socio-economic trajectory.

The statement also lamented the increasing harassment of journalists, which it said had marred the profession. “The year 2024 was particularly difficult for journalists and the practice of journalism as the profession witnessed series of attacks and harassment from state and non-state actors,” the NUJ said.

As the country transitions into 2025, the NUJ called on political leaders to rise above mediocrity and prioritize governance that addresses the welfare of the people. The statement urged leaders to embrace a national ethos that unites Nigerians beyond ethnic, religious, and geopolitical divides.

“As we move gradually into 2025, we hope that our political elites, especially those saddled with governance at all levels, will realize the importance of fully harnessing the little hope that is left in our people for national development,” the statement read.

The union stressed that robust policies, rooted in the welfare of the people, are essential for building a stronger nation. It warned that failure to address basic issues could escalate social tensions.

The NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to holding leaders accountable, emphasizing the need for bold, fair, and ethical journalism in the country.

“As Nigerians, we have the potential to make 2025 better than the preceding year. As journalists, we have the mandate to hold our politicians accountable in a manner that is just, bold, and equally accountable,” the union stated.

Despite the setbacks of 2024, the NUJ expressed hope for a brighter and more prosperous year ahead. “The Nigeria Union of Journalists wishes Nigerians a brighter, optimistic, and prosperous 2025,” the statement concluded.
