Numbers of meters installed by DisCos dipped by 60% In Q2/24-NERC
A fresh data by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has shown that the numbers of meter installation by electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in Nigeria dipped by as much as 60.86% in the second quarter of 2024.
In its second quarter 2024 report published on its website on Thursday, NERC disclosed that only 49,188 meters were installed during the period, marking a 60.86% decline from the 125,664 meters installed in the first quarter of 2024.
The report further highlighted that 35,985 of the meters, accounting for 73.16% of the total, were installed under the Meter Asset Providers (MAP) framework.
The report noted that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) expects Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to utilize a mix of the five meter financing frameworks outlined in the 2021 Meter Asset Provider (MAP) and National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP).
The commission emphasized that these frameworks are designed to help DisCos close metering gaps, providing protection for customers against potential exploitation resulting from the absence of meters.

“The new installations increased the net end-user metering rate in the NESI by 0.64pp between 2024/Q1 (44.79%) and 2024/Q2 (45.43%). During the quarter,
35,985 meters (73.16% of the total installations) were installed under the MAP framework while 264 meters were installed under the NMMP framework.

“The Commission expects DisCos to utilise a combination of the five (5) meter financing frameworks that have been provided in the 2021 Meter Asset Provider and National Mass Metering Regulations (NERC – R – 113 – 2021) to close their respective metering gaps” the commission stated.
