Despite their defeat to Atletico Madrid in a friendly at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Tuesday night, Super Eagles star, Kelechi Nwakali has expressed satisfaction over the performance of the Nigerian team.
The Eagles team B were edged 3-2 by the La Liga giants in the GOtv Max Cup, with goals by Angel Correa, Fernando Torres and Borja Garces making of less value goals by Nwakali and Usman Mohammed.
The recently crowned Europa League champions were given a good fight by the Nigerian side, with an 85th-minute goal in the visitors’ favour deciding the winner.
Nwakali, who scored the opened the scoring with a screamer, said he did not expect the Eagles to play as good as they did considering the fact that they only camped for three day ahead of the clash.
“It was a good game from our team, I didn’t expect this kind of performance from our team because we came only three days to the game,” he said in a post-match chat.
“We thank God for the opportunity from the coach. The team build-up and play was awesome.”
The Arsenal midfielder also mentioned that it was a thing of joy that he scored for the team on the night – his first goal for Nigeria, and added that the players will collectively work harder and keep pushing until they “get there.”
The hybrid friendly was put together by MultiChoice Nigeria, who brought the Spanish giants to the country for the very first time.
Nigeria will now focus on their preparations for the FIFA 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.
