Obasanjo speaks from both sides of his mouth, should not be taken serious —Presidency

The Nigerian government has reacted to recent remarks made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo where he overtly declared his loss of interest in the reelection of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on Wednesday in Abuja told correspondents that the former president speaks from two sides of his mouth.

Obasanjo had, in a comment, over the weekend alleged that the administration of President Buhari was characterised by incompetence, corruption, lack of focus, insecurity, nepotism, brazen impunity and denial of the obvious.

The former President denied neutrality on his stance, adding that Nigerians should ensure the president did not return to Aso Rock in 2019.

But the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity thinks there was no reason to take Obasanjo serious anymore.

“Former President Obasanjo denounces one person today and supports that same person the next day,” Mr Shehu said.

“When it pleases him, he brings God into the matter and uses that as his excuse for whatever position he has chosen,” he said.

“We have learnt not to take his utterances seriously anymore.

“We know that the slightest wind can make him change his mind again. After all, this is the same man who publicly tore his party registration card barely four years ago, and he now claims to be backing the same party,” Mr Shehu said.
