Odinga’s sister arrested by Kenyan prosecutors, charged with incitement

Ruth Odinga, sister of Kenyan opposition leader, Raila Odinga and former deputy governor of Kisumu State has been arrested following the orders of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Keriakor Tobiko.

The fiery politician will be charged with incitement to violence after attacks on staff of the electoral board last week, the country’s public prosecutor’s office has said days to the presidential re-run.

Meanwhile, Raila Odinga is heating up the polity again by declaring that he’ll not recognise a win by President Uhuru Kenyatta in Thursday’s scheduled election re-run.

Speaking with a Kenyan newspaper, the Nation, on Sunday, Odinga said; “As far as we are concerned, this is not an election”.

He also declared that the election will not be credible and there’ll be no reason to contest the outcome of the results in court.

“It is not a legal matter, but a political one which must be dealt with as such,” said Odinga, calling the prospect of challenging the result “a waste of time”.

In a related development, Wafula Chebukati, the chairman Kenyan Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) stated four days ago that he is not sure that the rescheduled presidential election slated for October 26 will be free and fair.

Citing divisions in the commission and interference from politicians, Chebukati said; “Ironically, the very people, political leaders, who are supposed to build the nations have become the greatest threat to the peace and stability of the nation.”

His comments are coming a day after Roselyn Akombe, the commissioner for the IEBC fled the country for the United States over fears that the rescheduled election would not be credible.
