OFFICIAL: Tuchel replaces Lampard as Chelsea manager

Former Paris St-Germain manager, Thomas Tuchel has on Tuesday been announced as the new manager of Premier League side, Chelsea.

Tuchel, who was sacked by the French Ligue 1 giants last December despite winning 75% of matches, will be taking over from Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard was shown the exit door on Monday following a poor run by the club, which had seen them drop drastically to the ninth spot in the Premier League this season.

The former midfielder, who holds the club’s goalscoring record, had his final game in charge on Sunday in a 3-1 FA Cup fourth-round win against Luton, but the victory was not enough to keep him.

Tuchel won two league titles with Paris Saint-Germain. He also won the French Cup and the French League Cup.

“I cannot wait to meet my new team and compete in the most exciting league in football. I am grateful to be part of the Chelsea family,” Tuchel said.

The 47-year-old, who had also managed Mainz and Borussia Dortmund in the past, becomes the 11th full-time manager appointed by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich since the billionaire bought the club in 2003.

Chelsea will host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday in the Premier League.

But the new manager, who signed an 18-month contract with an option to extend it, will adhere to coronavirus protocols before joining the team fully.
