Ohanaeze warns courts over FG's move to brand IPOB terrorists

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has moved to oppose an alleged move by the Federal Government to initiate a court process to officially pronounce the Indigenous People of Biafra a terrorist group.

Reports had claimed that the Federal Government has directed the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), to initiate a process in court to ban IPOB.

But in its response in a statement by its president, Nnia Nwodo, on Tuesday, Ohanaeze warned Nigerian courts not to make themselves cheap tools to be used against IPOB. It said that the courts must not undermine the nation’s democratic process by granting frivolous orders against IPOB.

Nwodo alleged that Ohanaeze was aware that the AGF was secretly approaching courts to obtain an order to designate IPOB as a terrorist group.

According to him, such a move is not only illegal, but aimed at continuing the harassment and intimidation of Igbo youths pursuing their constitutionally guaranteed fundamental human rights.

Ohanaeze said that it has already written letters to courts to be careful of such wrong moves which it said has the tendency of worsening the already frayed nerves, and frustrate the genuine efforts by the Igbo apex body and other leaders to bring peace to the land.
