Oil Workers call off strike

PENGASSAN and the futility of trade unionism in contemporary global economy

Labour unions in Nigeria’s oil sector, NUPENG (National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas ) and PENGASSAN (Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association) have called off their strike with immediate effect.

PENGASSAN President, Comrade Johnson Francis attributed their stance to the intervention of the Presidency and the clarification made by the Petroleum Ministry.

Inside sources say the decision was reached after nearly 10 hours of negotiations between the Petroleum Minister, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, NNPC officials and union leaders.

With truce reached, normalcy is expected to gradually return to a battered economy that had been beleaguered by fuel scarcity, blackouts, rising unemployment, factory closures, and an unstable currency.
