Okagbare qualifies for long jump final at world championships

Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor Wednesday leaped into the final of the long jump event at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in London.

The Queen of the tracks, who crashed out in the 100m Women’s event last Sunday, finished eighth in the overall classification after a 6.51m second round leap that followed a 6.21m in the first round.

Okagbare won the silver medal in the event from the 14th edition of the championships in Moscow in 2013 and will now fancy her chances of winning again in Friday’s final.

The 28-year old will be targeting her third global medal in the final, having also won silver with a 6.91m leap in 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

It was a bronze medal at the time, but was later elevated to silver following the disqualification of Russia’s Tatyana Lebedeva for positive dope test earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Ese Brume’s 6.38m third and final round leap was not enough to see her through as she finished 17th in the overall classification.
