Okagbare targets third global medal in long jump

Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor will be seeking to win a third long jump medal on Friday at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in London.

The 28-year old, who leaped into the final of the event after a second round jump of 6.51m on Wednesday, will battle for one of the three medals on offer at tonight’s final.

Okagbare won the silver medal in the event from the 14th edition of the championships in Moscow in 2013 and also won silver with a 6.91m leap in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

As it stands, if Blessing succeeds in winning a medal later on Friday, she will be handing Nigeria her first medal from the London event.

Meanwhile, Tobiloba Amusan, the first Nigerian to win the 100m hurdles title at the American collegiate championships, has qualified for the semi-final heats which will be held Friday evening at the London Stadium.

Amusan, who ran 12.57 seconds to qualify for the semis, will become the second Nigerian woman to run in the final of the 100m hurdles at the IAAF World Championships if she makes it to Saturday’s final.
