Okorocha-backed lawmakers, impeach Deputy gov Madumere

Imo State’s Deputy Governor Eze Madumere was on Monday evening impeached by the state House of Assembly members supposedly backed by Governor Rochas Okorocha.

He was impeached despite an order of the state high court ealier on Monday restraining the lawmakers and the state chief Judge, Paschal Nnadi, from any further action on Madumere’s impeachment proceedings until the matter was decided by the court.

The impeachment of the deputy governor followed a motion moved by majority leader, Lugard Osuji, who represents Owerri Municipal. He was seconded by Victor Onyewuchi, representing Owerri West LGA.

19 out of the 27 members of the state Assembly voted for Madumere’s impeachment.

Madumere has been having a running battle in Imo State with Governor Okorocha, who wants his Chief of Staff and son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, to succeed him against the ambition of the deputy governor, who also wants to become the state’s next governor.

The face-off between Madumere and Okorocha got worsened during the All Progressives Congress (APC) nationwide congresses, which reportedly favoured Madumere’s group of the party.

The results of the congresses have since been nullified by a court judgement, which ordered for fresh congresses in the state.
