Ondo lawmakers succumb to Akeredolu’s threat

Barely 24 hours after the impeachment of the Ondo state deputy speaker and the threat to impeach the speaker of the house, the Ondo State House of Assembly, reversed the impeachment of the deputy speaker Mr Iroju Ogundeji.

Ripples Nigeria had reported that the deputy speaker of the Ondo state house of assembly Mr. Iroju Ogundeji was on Tuesday impeached by his colleagues during the plenary session.

The decision which was signed by 16 lawmakers out of the 28 lawmakers in the house had caused a whole lot of uncertainty the state house of assembly.

This development had prompted the intervention of the commissioner of police Gbenga Adeyanju other security chiefs with their team of security personnel to ensure and restore peace in the assembly.

The Ondo state governor Rotimi Akeredolu had earlier insisted on the lawmakers’ reinstatement of the deputy speaker which led to threats by lawmakers to impeach the speaker if he adheres to the governor’s directive.

In a meeting with the aggrieved lawmakers and the leaders of the All Progressive Congress (APC) lead by the state party chairman Ade Adetimehin, the lawmakers reversed the impeachment of Ogundeji.

The reversal of the impeachment was moved in a motion by the Majority Leader, Hon. Gbenga Araoyinbo and seconded by Hon. Fatai Olotu from Akoko North East Constituency.

According to the lawmakers, the decision was as a result of the intervention of the leadership of APC at the state level, Governor Akeredolu and Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun, and other well-meaning Nigerians.
