Ondo varsity students ignore gov’s threat, lockdown state capital in protest

A combined force of students from Adekunle Ajasin University, Kayunga Akoko and Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, both in Ondo State on Tuesday grounded economic activities in Akure, the state’s capital.

The students in their hundreds were protesting and demanding the astronomical increments in their tuition by over 500 per cent.

The governor of the state, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had reportedly threatened to “flush” any student who went on the street to protest against the increments when the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) President, Bamidele Danielson Akpan visited him to agitate for a reduction in the back breaking fees being charged by the schools raging from #150,000 to #300,000.

It was gathered that the students of both universities had been in Akure since Monday but shelved the plan when the State Government mobilised hundreds of security agents to the streets of Akure in anticipation of the protest.
