NJC recommends immediate compulsory retirement of Onnoghen

Twenty-five lawyers who had hitherto filed a suit to challenge the suspension of Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, have announced their withdrawal from the suit.

The lawyers, who approached the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, said the decision was informed by the voluntary resignation of the CJN.

The plaintiffs, led by human rights activist, Mr Johnmary Jideobi, added that a further pursuit of the legal action would only mean “crying more than the bereaved.”

Meanwhile, matter was earlier fixed to be heard on May 23.

Amidst his trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) for non-declaration and false declaration of assets, Onnoghen reportedly tendered his resignation on Friday upon the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC).

The suspension of Onnoghen had generated arguments among lawyers in the legal profession some of whom described the move as an aberration.
