Barely 24 hours after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo visited Delta State, a suspected attack by an unknown militant group, left a pipeline said to belong to the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) at Ughelli area of the state in flames.
The pipeline located at the back of SETRACO construction yard, along the East/West express road, reportedly went up in flames at about 4:30pm.
While militants are being fingered in the attack, a security source however claimed that the flames from the pipeline were caused by bush burning.
The source disclosed that the fire broke out after somebody set fire on the area and that a pipeline, which had some crude oil spill on it caught fire.
Osinbajo who visited Delta State on Monday had in his speech at Gbaramatu kingdom said that attacks on pipelines in the region from 1998 till 2015 have killed over 20,000 persons.
His visit was part of efforts by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to resolve the lingering crisis in the region which has drastically affected the country’s oil output and economy.
