Outrage as naval officer shoots, kills pedestrian

Wild protests have erupted in Awaka, a suburb in Owerri, the Imo State capital after a naval officer on a stop-and-search operation shot and killed an innocent pedestrian along Owerri/Umuahia expressway.

Reports say the action by the naval officer triggered demonstrations by irate youths in the area who seized the AK47 rifle belonging to the naval officer.

An eyewitness who declined to be named said one of the naval officers had ordered one of his colleagues to shoot the victim which he did without hesitation and the action triggered the reprisal attacks by the irate youths.

The eyewitness said; “One of the naval officers ordered his colleague to shoot the victim and he immediately obeyed the instruction. The victim died on the spot.
