Outrage as senators earn N51.2bn in 33 months

Many Nigerians have cried out against the recently discovered huge allowances accruable to the 109 senators even as prominent individuals are calling for a downward review of the payments.

An atmosphere of uncertainty recently pervaded the Senate Chamber following a revelation by a radical activist and senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, that a Senator earns as much as N13.5 million monthly as running cost apart from the N750, 000 monthly salaries.

The revelation about the alleged huge remuneration, which hit the airwaves since last week, had opened a floodgate of reactions as most Nigerians kicked against the huge amount.

Although the senate had said the revelation is nothing new and that it is in public domain, many people believe that salaries and allowances of legislators had been a closely guided secret.
