Palestinian leadership rebukes Trump's aid cut threat

Weeks after Washington informed that it is withholding $65m out of the $125m aid package earmarked for United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA, which amounts to funding to the agency by half, Palestinian leaders have rebuked the threat.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday spokesman for the Palestinian presidency, Nabil Abu Rudaineh said; “This policy of threats … will not work with the Palestinian people.

“The issue of Jerusalem is a holy issue – it is the key to war and peace in the region. It cannot be bought or sold with all the world’s money,” said Abu Rudaineh, according to the official Palestinian news agency, Wafa.

“If Jerusalem is off the negotiating table, so is the US.”

UNRWA has revealed that the decision by the United States to cut funds to the organization has sparked its largest-ever financial crisis.

The UN agency has now decided to launch a global fundraising campaign to fill in budget gaps left behind by the US administration’s decision to withhold $65 million which amounts to half of the cash it was due to receive from the US this month.

The decision drew condemnation from Palestinians, praise from Israel, and expressions of deep concern from UN officials and refugee groups.
