Palm Springs: Man guns down two cops, wounds another, on the run

Two cops who were trying to resolve a family issue when they stood near the front door speaking with a man were shot dead when the man they had been talking to pulled out a gun and opened fire.

The shots fired by the man killed Jose “Gil” Gilbert Vega and Lesley Zerebny both Palm Spring police officers while a third officer who was at the scene escaped with gun wounds and remained in hospital.

The suspect could not be identified immediately as at the time of filing in this report.

SWAT officers quickly surrounded the house where the shooting took place, and authorities said late Saturday night that the gunman might still be holed up inside.

“It was a simple family disturbance and he elected to open fire on a few of the guardians of the city,” said Chief Bryan Reyes at a news conference.
