PAN: Nigeria may lose N1trn to poultry products’ smuggling
Nigeria is on the verge of losing nearly N1 trillion yearly through smuggling of poultry products if the illicit act is not checked, Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has warned.
President of the association, Dr. Ayoola Oduntan, disclosed this in a chat with New Telegraph in Lagos.
He noted that influx of poultry products is killing the sector and Nigeria’s economy at an alarming rate.
The government he said needs to go tougher on smugglers of poultry products in the country in a bid to limit their negative influences on the poultry industry and the risks their activities pose to human health.
According to him, it is worrying that the country’s revenue loss to poultry products’ smuggling is on the rise daily, adding that as at last count, it was about N700 billion.
According to him, it is expected to reach the N1 trillion mark next year if not tackled head-on.
