Papa Wemba breathes his last on stage
According to media reports, influential Congolese musician Papa Wemba is dead, after the 66-year-old collapsed on stage during a concert held in the West African city of Abidjan in Ivory Coast.
A video from the concert in Abidjan shows the musician whose real names are Jules Shungu Webadio collapse on stage as his dancer who were backing him continued to thrill the audience not knowing their band leader was struggling to stay alive after he slumped on stage.
France 24, a French broadcaster confirmed the death of the legendary musician who started his musical career in the year 1969.
Papa Wemba won over scores of fans with his brand of soukous rock music; he also influenced and inspired a cult movement known as the Sapeurs whose members, young men, spend huge amounts of money on designer clothes.
