PARAGUAY: 25-yr-old protester killed by rubber bullet during demonstrations

A rubber bullet fired by anti-riot police has killed a 25-year-old protester in Paraguay’s capital Asuncion.

According to Paraguayan opposition, the victim, Rodrigo Quintana was killed at the headquarters of the liberal youth activist group.

The victim’s doctor said Rodrigo suffered a severe head injury even as the interior ministry said in a statement that an investigation into the death of the man would be opened.

Demonstrations were sparked after a secret Senate vote for a constitutional amendment that would allow President Horacio Cartes to run for re-election was mooted but was followed by violent clashes and the country’s Congress was stormed and set alight.

Around 200 protesters were detained, police said, and shops and government buildings were vandalised.
