Patience Jonathan drags EFCC to Port Harcourt court in fresh suit

The embattled wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, has dragged the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to court in another suit filed at a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.

In the new suit filed by her counsel, Granville Abibo (SAN), she is challenging the invasion of her property in Port Harcourt.

The matter which was slated for hearing on Monday was later adjourned to April 24 following a notice EFCC brought to the court, which the applicant needs to respond to.

Counsel to the former First Lady, Abibo, faulted the notice brought by the EFCC and told the court that late response of the anti-graft agency is a tactic to delay the matter.

But responding to questions from newsmen outside the court room, Abibo disclosed that they are in court to stop the EFCC from intimidating the wife of the former President.

“You are aware that Mrs. Jonathan has always tried to be law abiding despite being harassed and intimidated by the media trials.

“The court being the last hope of the common man and that is why we have come to court. But you know in court the other party has the right to reply but the matter has just been adjourned because the EFCC just brought a notice to court today which we need to respond to.

“For us we have put the facts on the table truthfully. The EFCC took the first shot by freezing her accounts but they have refused to stop there. They have also gone ahead to take other unnecessary actions which we feel is violating her rights,” he said.

Mrs Jonathan also has a fundamental rights enforcement suit against the EFCC before a Federal High Court in Lagos.

She is seeking in that suit an order of the court to de-freeze her $15.5million domiciled with Skye Bank.

The matter was last week adjourned till March 6 for further hearing.
